The Surya Namaskar has been one of the integral parts of yoga at home and is often practised early morning in Indian households, sometimes even as a part of daily prayers. Translating literally to ‘sun salutation’, the Surya Namaskar is a seamless and integrated sequence of twelve basic yogic asanas, connected to the breath, and in some Indian traditions, to specific mantras. Surya Namaskar is one of the best-known sequences of yoga training and constitutes an important part of almost every style of yoga. Though the sequence actually varies across different styles of yoga training and instructors, it generally consists of the following 12 asanas –

  • Pranamasana (Prayer pose)
  • Hastauttanasana (Raised arms pose)
  •  Hastapadasana (Standing forward bend)
  • Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Equestrian pose)
  • Dandasana (Stick pose)
  • Ashtanga Namaskara (Salute with eight parts or points)
  • Bhujangasana (Cobra pose)
  • Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward facing dog pose)
  • Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Equestrian pose)
  • Hastapadasana (Standing forward bend)
  • Hastauttanasana (Raised arms pose)
  • Tadasana (Mountain Pose)

The sequence is usually done at least twice so that both sides of the body have a chance to engage in poses such as the ashtanga namaskara. Not only is the Surya Namaskar a great way to learn the basic, fundamental poses of yoga, this sequence is also known to carry a lot of benefits, for the mind, body and spirit. Here are some –

  • Shed the Weight – Depending upon the intensity with which you practice, and the number of rounds you do, this sequence can be a very challenging and calorie-burning exercise. Indeed, the Surya Namaskar is one of the best ways to use yoga at home to lose weight, and integrating it to your workout routine can be just the thing that gives you an edge.
  • Strength and Flexibility – The sequence seamlessly transitions from standing asanas to floor-based asanas, and actively engages the core, arms, legs, and hip region. Regularly practising this sequence can help improve the strength and flexibility of all the areas of the body – which would certainly beat the one-muscle group at a time approach of the gym.
  • Stress – For many, stress reduction is a major reason why they choose to undertake yoga training, and the Surya Namaskar is the perfect remedy for mental and physical strain and frustration. With each yoga pose in the sequence connecting to breath, Surya Namaskar allows you to bring yourself to the present, focus, and release all that you have been holding back.
  • Better Blood Circulation – Nothing like a sequence that actively engages the whole body to get your blood flowing. Adding the Surya Namaskar into your workout regimen can mean that you get your blood pumping even with yoga at home, and with better blood circulation comes a nourished scalp and skin, a healthy heart, and a healthy body.
  • Better Skin – With hormonal balance, better digestion, muscle toning, blood circulation and working a sweat comes glowing, youthful skin free of troubles such as acne or wrinkles. Indeed, the Surya Namaskar can be an arsenal for cultivating healthy skin through yoga at home.
  • Balance – Like all of yoga training, the Surya Namaskar is aimed at bringing a balance in the mental and physical state of the body. The sequence does this by regulating digestion and hormone production, helping the mind shed stress and regain focus, promoting physical balance and stability, and increasing the energy of the body, combating the fatigue that comes from the daily grind of our modern lifestyle.

Hence, practicing the Surya Namaskar daily can bring a lot of benefits to your mind and body, and bring the best of yoga training to you in a condensed, easy to learn form.
